Thomas Adam Ewing (d. 1879) ran a successful pharmaceutical business in Fitzroy and served on the town council, where one of his notable achievements was the extablishment of the Fitzroy Free Public Library which opened in 1877. His son Samuel Arthur Ewing (1864-1941), a distinguished surgeon and art collector, made a gift in 1938 to the Melbourne University Union of Australian paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture from his collection.
